Sandbags – Flood defence

What do you think of when asked about ‘sandbags’?

When you think of sandbags, you likely will think of the 25kg sacks. These are used to put a barrier in doorways or to build walls on riverbanks when there is a risk of flooding (or even when flooding has already happened).

These are reasonably effective but very labour intensive to put in place, especially when used as a flood defence along riverbanks or to divert water from city/town streets.

Bulk Bags filled with sand do the same job in a fraction of the time! They form a strong barrier to reduce flooding and water flow. The sand absorbs the water in the same way as the 25kg sandbags – just on a bigger scale.

Big bags are not suitable for all flood defences – it would be difficult getting past a big bag blocking you front door! But along riverbanks or blocking streets to protect property from flowing water – they are great.

Think of the recent scare when the Whalley Bridge Dam was in danger of bursting. The bulk bags filled with sand were used to stabilise the dam and act as a flood defence for the people, homes and properties in its path. Why not use the same bags for other applications?
