Safety Checks on All Big Bags

Don’t risk the Health and Safety of your staff and stakeholders!

Here are the things you need to consider before using an FIBC Bulk Bag.

1.  Is the Safe Working Load (SWL) right for you?

Check the label to make sure it is suitable for the weight you want to put in the bag.

2.  Is the Safety Factor (SF) right for you?

– Are you going to fill the bag and empty it once?  You need a Safety Factory of 5:1

– Are you are going to fill and empty the bag more than once? Then you need a Safety Factory of 6:1

3.  Is the discharge chute tied correctly?

If the bag has a discharge chute, check that it is securely tied.

4.  Is there any physical damage to the bag?

Sometimes bags can get caught in transit when on a pallet or when being lifted by a FLT.  It is important not to use a bag if any damage has occurred as this will be the weakest point and is likely to make the bag fail.  Clean ups are not good…

5.  Is there a type tested certificate number on the label?

Whilst there is no legal requirement to have a bag certified, it is recommended.

6.  Check the lifting loops (especially if the bags is multi-trip) – is there any wear on them?

When checking the lifting loops, make sure you look at the underside of the loop.  Often the FLT tines are rounded on the top but can be sharp underneath and will rub the web strap when lifted.
