Founded in 1998, Rise Against Hunger mobilizes more than 400,000 volunteers each year to package meals for people in need around the globe. Since 2005, Rise Against Hunger has distributed nearly 500,000,000 meals to recipients in 76 countries with a mission to end hunger.
Our Judi Kelly was at one of the packing events held in St Helens on Sunday. Here is what she thought of it.
This is my second time attending a Rise Against Hunger event and it was amazing! Lots of people giving up their morning to pack meals for the less fortunate, it is very humbling.
How it works – four people add a different ingredient into a small polythene bag which is then passed onto the ‘weighers’. The Weighers then check that each bag weighs within the guild lines (if it doesn’t rise is added) then passed onto the ‘sealers’ – that was my job! The polythene sacks are sealed and placed in boxes which are shipped all over the world.
Sounds easy enough – but consider that in two and half hours, 32,000 meals were bagged and boxes. Pretty impressive with less than 50 people taking part.
It was fun to be involved with, working along side people of all ages (from 8 year olds to 80 year olds) all for a common good – fantastic. Only draw back was the lovely hairnets, not my best look!
I would say if you have a chance to go to one of their many events through the UK, give it a try. So rewarding!
