Selecting the right FIBC

Judi Kelly • Apr 24, 2018

Getting the right bag for your product is important.

Products being held in bulk bags differ considerably, as do the type of bulk bag required. This is also the case for different production methods and equipment. As such, the bag should be designed to meet the needs of the product, filler and discharger. It is recommended that before deciding on a specific style of bag, that the supplier of the FIBCs be consulted and their recommendations be taking into account.

These are other things to consider when looking at the style for your product.

1. Weight of product to be contained in the bag.

2. The required volume

3. Bulk density

4. Flow characteristics (does it flow well or clump)

5. Degree of aeration

6. Particle size and shape (may need sift proof seams)

7. Compatibility with materials used to construct the bulk bags (Woven PP)

8. Fill temperature

9. Does it need to be Food Grade or UN approved?

The method of filling, handling, transporting, storage and discharge of the product need to be considered, in addition to the above.

The number of trips required, the number of times the bag will be lifted on each trip and the environmental conditions likely to be encountered or the bag stored in.

FIBCs that have been obtained second hand and those not designed specifically for the product to be contained should not be used without reference to the manufacturer.
