Filling, Stability and Discharge

Judi Kelly • Mar 12, 2018

Here is some basic information on the filling, stability and discharging of FIBC Bulk Bags.

Filling

FIBCs are generally filled while suspended using a lifting devise and with the base of the bag on or near the ground or a pallet. Other methods may be applicable in consultation with the manufacturer or supplier (additional requirements may be needed).

If the FIBC has a discharge spout or other discharge method on the base, this must be tied off or closed before filling.

Before filling with material at temperatures above 60 degrees centigrade, the manufacturer or supplier should be consulted.

Stability

To ensure good stability the height of the bag should not be more than twice the base of the bag or shortest side (ie 110 x 100cms base would have a maximum height of 200cms). If possible the height should be 1.5 times the base dimension.

Depending on the product going into the bag, this may change.

Using a vibrating plate can help with stability as any trapped air would be dispersed.

Discharging

FIBCs are generally emptied by gravity but can also be emptied by suction or in certain types of unit, by blowing. The flow characteristics of the contents and the cost of ancillary equipment dictate the method used.

When emptying by gravity through a bottom discharge spout, the rate of discharge can be controlled by restricting the width of the aperture. Discharge flow may be stopped completely by lowering the FIBC onto the discharged load or using a ‘B-Lock’ devise.

Products are all different when discharging, by using a discharge spout, the flow is controlled. If the product is not free flowing and blowing or suction facilities are not available or appropriate, then a total discharge base or conical base could be more suitable. These methods do not allow the restriction or stopping of products.
